Mission

To cover various and sundry topic of neighborhood interest regarding LeDroit Park, the surrounding neighborhoods, and Washington in general.

What’s in a name?

The name Left for LeDroit describes the author’s situation and serves as a pun (in French).  Amzi Barber, one of the founders of Howard University and the original developer of the neighborhood, named the neighborhood after his father-in-law LeDroict Langdon, but dropped the ‘c’.  In French le droict means ‘the prevarication’— perhaps Mr. Langdon’s parents thought he was destined for politics.

Coincidentally, without the ‘c’, the word has another meaning in French: le droit means ‘the right’.  Thus Left for LeDroit describes the author’s move and translates playfully to ‘left to the right’.  Clever, no?
