LeDroit Park, when it was established in 1873, was one of the first suburbs of Washington.
Thanks for the photographs. Actually, this structure has been just down the street for years. It was in front of the now-defunct Shaw Junior High Building at a converted fire station. It looks great as part of the new lirary!
The sculpture is by Craig Kraft who actually lives in the converted fire station, and has his studio there as well. The title of the piece is “Vivace.” Check out Craig’s website here: http://www.craigkraftstudio.com/
It was commissioned for the library. It was down the street in front of the artist’s house waiting for construction to finish. There’s also a similar mini-me version in front of the Jazz place on 14th, near R(?) Street.
Cool photos.
I just visited the new library for the first time yesterday and I was blown away! It is beautiful and a wonderful addition to the neighborhood. The sculpture was what caught my eye, I will have to check out Craig’s site, local art is the best!
I love this sculpture. I smile every evening I pass by. It is the perfect finishing touch to a fantastic new library Thank you to Mr. Kraft!
