Shaw’s Tavern, with apartments above, will open mid-June
Mr. Steve May relayed more details on Shaw’s Tavern at last night’s meeting of the LeDroit Park Civic Association. The restaurant, slated to open in mid-June, will seat 65 – 70 people inside and 15 – 18 people on a sidewalk patio on the 6th Street front. On Florida Avenue near the eastern end of the building, the restaurant will feature a special door just for take-out pizza orders. (Click the image above for a larger version.)
Inside, however, the restaurant will feature a variety of entrées priced from $12 – $18. Mr. May distributed a tentative menu.
The restaurant expects to stay open until 11:30 or midnight on weeknights and until midnight or 1 am on weekends.
As for the adjacent empty lot on 6th Street, Mr. May offered to buy it, but says the owner demanded $1 million, which is far too much for a vacant lot of that size.
While Shaw’s Tavern will occupy the first floor, the restaurant will rent out three one-bedroom apartments upstairs and expects to have them ready by May.
The empty space to the south is not a vacant lot. It’s the side yard of 1839 6th St NW (Square 475, lot 56). The total land value of the whole lot is $309,000. The value of the building is $176,000. So $1M is ridiculous. More like a leave-me-the-hell-alone price. Or the whole story is not actually true and May never really did offer to buy the land.
crin, thank you for the correction.
Thanks for the update. Looks like I’ll definitely be frequenting this spot!
How do we learn more about renting those rooms?
wow, i really like the carry out window directly into the kitchen. i hope that’s something that can survive city rules and regulations.
Dear Shaw’s Tavern – I can’t wait for your arrival! This is great news. I’ve been really hoping a restaurant would come into that wonderful location.
how is this any different from the joint on 1st and rhode island?
i was hoping for a cupcake takeout or an upscale dining cupcake establishment (ie, caviar cupcakes). i guess i will continue to dream.
Great looking menu and awesome looking space.
Does Mr. May have other restaurants he’s run/owned/been a chef at on his resume?
Just curious, and wish him well. We’ll be around to check things out once this opens up.
@7 — Rustik is great, and I love it there. But this is much closer to LeDroit, in an area with few restaurants, and it looks like it will have a more expansive menu than Rustik. (No worries, Rustik, I will definitely go to both spots.)
Thanks so much for the update! Especially for linking to the sample menu. Pity, was hoping it would be something different and maybe veggie-friendly. Silly me.
Good luck to Mr. May!
Actually, the owner of 1839 is offering that spot for almost a million dollars. So I can’t confirm that Mr. May offered to buy it, but I can confirm that that’s the selling price and it has been on the market almost a year-maybe more.
