U Street Strut

Peacock Strut

Zipping through the City Paper we came across this mention of two glamorous LeDroit Park residents— a peacock and a peahen— discovered on the 500 block of U Street.

“A person claiming to be the owner of the birds did not know they were illegal to own,” according to the Humane Society. The owner surrendered the birds, which were relocated to a sanctuary in Virginia.

At least it’s a more innocuous form of fowl play.

  2. I called animal control last weekend. That peackock was LOUD, shouting most of the day and keeping us up at night sometimes. Glad to see this – I’ve noticed a strange quiet on our block this week! BTW, that peacock was not nearly this pretty.

  3. Peacocks are still used as palace alarm systems in some countries. They are LOUD. The male’s call is probably about the loudest bird call in the avian world, second only to the kookabura call. Probably not the best choice for urban poultry. I recommend quail or (female/hen) chickens.
