This is a great idea. There is nothing to preclude this from being closed off on the weekends for several hours to operate a farmers market on the road. Kudos!

Stephen,
Thank you! It required many hours of Photoshop work.

Stephen, IMGoph, and Michael,
I considered the idea of a medial park, but worried that it would suffer from desolation due to its separation from the active sidewalks. Though certainly better than the status quo, I suspect fewer people would want to sit in what is essentially a grassy street median. That said, it would certainly be cheaper to build— and money is no small matter to ignore!

The advantage of the proposal above is that it enhances existing spaces (the sidewalks) whose heavy use warrants improvement.

i've always envisioned decking it over in the manner that stephen mentions above, but i like your idea as well. it would be interesting to see a study to determine if the weight of automobile traffic could be handled on such a deck, just to know if this was an option.

decking over the block of north capitol street between T and rhode island avenue to create a park for eckington and bloomingdale is another place i'd like to see this done.

That rendering is nice - what software did you use to make it? Although I like the design (wider sidewalks would be great there), it may be more prudent to make the decked-over section a park or farmers market area instead of making it the roadway. In order for the deck to carry the load of automobile traffic, it would cost more money to construct (and thus be less likely to be built.)
